Floating (Wall-Mounted) Vanities

Pros: Opens up floor space and makes small bathrooms feel larger. Easier to clean underneath — no dust traps. Height is adjustable during installation (standard is 32–34 inches from floor to countertop, but you can mount higher or lower). Modern, minimal aesthetic.

Cons: Requires solid wall backing (wood studs or concrete) to support the weight. Plumbing connections need to be inside the wall or concealed. Slightly less internal storage volume than a same-width freestanding unit. Installation is more involved — not a typical DIY project.

Freestanding Vanities

Pros: Easier installation — set it in place and connect the plumbing. More storage space (the cabinet extends to the floor). Stable on any floor type. Hides plumbing pipes behind the cabinet back. Wider range of traditional and transitional styles.

Cons: Takes up the full visual footprint. Harder to clean around the base. Fixed height. Can make small bathrooms feel cramped.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose floating if your bathroom is under 60 square feet, you want a modern look, and you have solid wall construction. Choose freestanding if you need maximum storage, prefer traditional styling, or want the simplest possible installation. Either way, prioritize the right size over the mounting style — a properly sized vanity matters more than how it attaches to the room.
